As well as the other thing I mentioned in a different topic (an achievements page, like the medals page), the main page on the site is the starting point for the whole site.
With that in mind, here are some suggestions to make it a bit more friendly & informative
1. The 'profiles that need verifying' could ideally be higher up the page, so people see them as soon as they come on site. Perhaps it could be swapped with the 'who's online' box?
2. The main page lists the 'latest' forum post, but the 'Instructional Videos' box, shows the most popular, but maybe a box for 'the latest Instruction Video's' should be there as well, as I presume that whilst all are good, those that have been posted the longest will remain in the 'Instructional Videos' box and others more recently posted will remain unnoticed by the majority. As it stands now, you have to scroll through pages and pages to see if any recent ones have been posted.
I am sure some other things will hump into my head over time or other members have idea's as well.

1) The importance of this box will gradually lower as the site grows, that's why it's not too high up.
2) This section show 3 random videos that fulfill these requirements: Have a positive vote score (thumbs up - thumbs down > 0) and posted by a verified profile. This is done to ensure we only show community approved content and nobody creates a quick anonymous/fake/non-serious profile just to post some spam that'll get displayed on the front page as "newest video". I agree that the instructional videos page could have a "sort by latest" feature at some point :)
