Didn't see a thread on this, so figure I would start one.

What are your favorite patterns? The school I'm from uses the ITF / Chang Hon pattern set. The order of the black-belt forms is taught a bit different from ITF from what I understand - but the nine color belt forms are the same, and in the same order.

My favorite TKD patterns in no particular order are Do San, Jhoon-Gun, and Hwa Rang. I don't have any I particularly dislike, but none of the black belt forms that I know (7 of them) I would say are particularly fun, or as interesting as the three lower ranked forms mentioned. I particularly like those three because they either introduce new concepts, or work existing concepts well. Do San introduces off-angle attacks with the 45 degree movements, the wedge 'block', and kicking.

Jhoon Gun I like because it works on transitions and off-balancing with the front to side stance switches. Hwa Rang builds on that.

In 2020 with our school closed due to COVID, and moving from the Pacific Northwest US to Texas, I set about learning more academically about the art, and I started learning (thanks to excellent videos by various instructors on YouTube and some other websites) some of the karate patterns that our TKD forms were based from, like the Taikyoku and Heian kata.

Probably Wonhyo.

I don't typically latch on to any one pattern.

My focus is on tactics, distancing, and dealing with the opponent. The patterns are my sounding board, a framework, and then our syllabus.

Cheers,

Colin
