Just wondering as I go through profiles on here. I notice alot of high ranking black belts do not include their colour belts and only post from their black belt up to their current degree. Is this a normal practice here on TKDchecker? From my experience on another "Checker" site, profiles get disputed or not voted for because of this. Even a Master with or 8 degrees would not get verified unless he lists all his belts. Not passing judgement in any way. I just want to get a feel for what the expectation and norms are for this particular "Checker" site. Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

If it is 20 + years since you graded for your colored belts, it may be hard to find the old certs. I think that the black belt dates are most important. And there are so meany different colored belt systems that I cant tell the difference.

We removed the requirement for adding all belts (like people must do on the BJJ site, for instance), because there are several different belt color systems in Taekwondo. The only consistent ones are the black belt ranks.

The community could of course decide that it's a requirement to add colored belts and downvote those who doesn't :)

Perhaps instead of listing the varied color-belts, listing of the kup/kuep/guep/gup (however you were taught to spell it) levels would suffice.

The federation of schools I came up through used a color scheme the same of BJJ (but before BJJ had formalized their belt system) except that we also had yellow. When I was a 4th kup about to grade for 3rd, the head of our federation made a rather drastic change to our color belt scheme - we went from 9 kup levels to 10, and added a color stripe to every solid belt color as intermediate steps. Prior to that we went:

white -> yellow -> 2nd blue -> 1st blue -> 2nd purple -> 1st purple -> 3rd brown -> 2nd brown -> 1st brown -> black belt

now they add a stripe the color of the next solid belt.

We never had orange, green, or red belts in our curriculum like other schools do.

Another TKD school chain that was WT affiliated also didn't use the 'standard' color belts. They had stripes too, but they went

white -> yellow -> green -> blue -> purple -> brown for their color belt system, and added a stripe between solid colors as well.

This could make sense, however there are so many paths to black belt. I know many Master Instructors that require probably 15 “geup ranks” using a combination of Kukkiwon and Chang Heon required patterns. There is no singular 9 geup / 9 Dan system.

Additionally, there is no requirement for database recognition of geup ranks by either Kukkiwon nor the ITF(s) that I know of...many are simply issued at the dojang level with or without certification.

As for many of us, I have been training over 30 years and honestly have no idea of when I received my 8th Geup, Yellow Belt.
